History:

In December 1971, a group of deaf college students formed "Deaf College Students Association" to maintain and enhance their friendship. Later, it became bigger and was renamed as "Deaf People Association". In October, 1978, for the purpose of promoting sign language and helping the deaf to communicate with the public, an association named "Sign Language Study Group of the Deaf in Taiwan, Republic of China, was formed and registered in the Ministry of Interior. Under this group, the pantomine company, sign language club and sign language training course were very popular. In 1990, the Study Group was renamed as "National Association of the Deaf in Republic of China". In 1993, it registered in the Taipei District Court to become a non-profit organization.

Honor:

The Association was awarded by Ministry of interior as "excellent social organization" for three consecutive years: 1990, 1991 and 1992. It was also awarded by Taipei City Government as "Excellent Disable Welfare Organization" in 1992.

Goal:

The goals are set to develop and to promote sign language, to enhance the public to understand and to accept the deaf; to assist government to offer better social welfare and to create more work opportunities for the deaf; to help the deaf to deal with their mental and physical problems, to establish a non-barrier living environment for the deaf.
